Chief Academic Officer

Yvonne De La Pena is a self-proclaimed bicultural Latina interested in all things technology and education. She graduated with a PhD in Educational Psychology from the School of Education & Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she focused on interactive learning media. Raised in Mexico, Dr. De La Pena returned to Texas after high school with her parents and younger sister, where she obtained a B.S. in Computer Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. Her next stop was at Silicon Valley where she worked as a software engineer for several years before entering graduate school. Passionate about fighting the underrepresentation of Latinas in computing, her doctoral dissertation explored the characteristics of an afterschool program in supporting the development of programming skills and computing concepts by young Latinas. In addition, during her free time, Dr. De La Pena volunteers with non-profit organizations dedicated to making technology and computing more accessible to underrepresented youth, such as the Computer Clubhouse at the Tiger Woods Learning Center, the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, and Bresee Foundation, all in California; more recently she has worked with CodeNow NYC.
