Julio Ricardo Varela (@julito77) is a Digital Producer for Al Jazeera America's "The Stream," an award-winning social media news show. Recently, he become a contributor to the Opinion pages of The Boston Globe and continues to write weekly columns for NBC Latino.

Julito is also the founder of LatinoRebels.com, a premiere independent media company that in two years has become a "must read" news source for any journalist committed to covering the U.S. Latino world and how the media portrayals of U.S. Latinos are changing.

The Rebels' stories have been featured in countless national and global media outlets, including The New York Times, Forbes, Le Monde, Yahoo! News, HuffPost, MSNBC.com, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, U.S. News, Deadspsin, Univision News, Mun2, and The Atlantic. He is a weekly contributor to NBC Latino. Julito has also represented the Rebels on Face the Nation, Univision, and NPR.

A 1990 graduate of Harvard College and a native of Puerto Rico (and The Bronx), Julito started his career as a contributing reporter for The Boston Globe, before becoming Vice President of Reading/Language Arts for Houghton Mifflin Company in Boston. He still roots for the Knicks, but stopped rooting for the Yankees when Nomar Garciaparra started playing at Fenway.
